According to recent information, the cost of adoptions in the US is falling into the following ranges:
| Adoptions from US Foster care | $0- $3,000 |
| Licensed private agencies | $7,500 - $40,000 + |
| Unlicensed private entities [Attorneys or facilitators] | $15,000 - $50,000 + |
| Intercountry adoptions | $15,000 - $45,000 + |
These figures can seem overwhelming, but note that the ranges are fairly wide and not all adoptions will fall at the top of the cost pyramid. There are a number of resources that can help offset the cost and expenses. Also, there are expenses that will occur in all adoptions, such as home studies, while there are a number of expenses that may pertain only to specific types of adoption.
Adoptions within the US will probably be broken down into two categories: birth mother expenses and professional fees. Birth mother expenses will vary greatly with the individual birth mother, who may or may not have insurance or Medicaid coverage in her state, and may or may not have large residential needs.
Intercountry adoption cost is of course affected by the cost of travel and accommodation in a foreign country, but in general can be broken into several categories: Professional fees in the US; Foreign fees; and travel related costs.
